DUFUR SCHOOL/COMMUNITY LIBRARY
From the Librarian:
We are pleased to announce that Dufur/School Community Library has received a Ready to Read Grant for $1,066. The grant was written with the intent of improving our children’s reading area. The money was used to purchase four large floor cushions, a small reading table, and a storage unit for the story-time cushions. The storage unit serves a dual purpose, in addition to keeping the reading cushions contained; one side is a magnetic white board. Five early learning photo magnet sets were purchased specifically to be used to enhance our PreK program. Also our junior section now offers twelve popular fiction titles on CD’s.
The Ready to Read Grant was established in 1993 to assist local libraries in helping to achieve the Oregon Benchmarks for childhood learning and development. Oregon libraries may use these funds for children ages 0-14 and early literacy services for children ages 0-5.
“Oregon’s public libraries are devoted to seeing that all Oregon children are ready to learn and ready to read when they get to kindergarten,” said State Librarian Jim Scheppke. “We do that by putting books in the hands of pre-school children and teaching parents and caregivers that literacy begins at birth. When kids reach school age we keep them reading in the summer with our outstanding statewide summer reading program in nearly every community.
We are pleased to announce that our library has received a $1000.00 grant from the Wasco County Cultural Trust Coalition. A proposal was submitted to arrange for a prominent children’s author to visit the area. More information will be released as it becomes available. Stay tuned!
Reminder: PreK Storytime is held every Wed. morning at 9:30 for all local preschool aged children.
Technology in the Library:
Maintaining technology is one of the goals of the school and the library district. The following are examples that support this goal:
It is now possible to request books from home. By logging in on the GorgeLINK website you can request books from any of the libraries in the library district. The courier delivers on Tuesdays. Contact us for you library card number and pin.
Overdue notices can be sent to your e-mail address eliminating snail mail. Come in or call the library and we can set this up for you.
A new computer provided by the Wasco County Library Services District was added to the library for patron use.
Audio books are available online through Library2Go. If you are interested in listening to books, the library has MP3 players available for this purpose.
GRANGE NEWS:
May is the month the Grange cleans the pioneer cemetery just prior to Memorial Day. They can always use more help for this project! Contact Duane Powell or any Grange member if you are willing to pitch in!
Regular meeting with potluck.
Don’t forget the 1st Sunday of each month is the Jam Session at Ramsey Grange from 3:00 to 6:00. The wonderful homemade pies and cakes with
coffee help support the Music Department at the Dufur School.
DUFUR HISTORICAL SOCIETY:
The Living History Museum is open with new displays, updated old displays, and a restocked gift shop. This is a great way to introduce/entertain visitors to your home and our community!
RECYCLING
The Lions Club mans the recycling center on a volunteer basis on Saturday mornings between 10:00 and 12:00. If there is not a volunteer available, the center will not be opened. If closed, it is asked that people do not leave their recyclables anyway as they get blown over the area and are a lot of work to pick up.
A reminder that newspaper recycling is in the green shed behind Kramer’s Market.

Hello, are there any areas between Dufur and The Dalles that would be up for rent? What we have right now is internet as our main resource to locate places, yet we know there are plenty of rental by owner. We are a couple with a daughter who are looking to find a place call home in this lovely area.
Ramon & Lela
Ramon & Lela,
We’re glad that you’re looking to call our area home. Currently we haven’t been contacted by any rental owners as to vacancies or availability. We can only suggest that you contact our member real-estate businesses and those in The Dalles as they may have information regarding rentals.
We wish you all the best of luck in the search.
