NOVEMBER 2011 NEWSLETTER FOR THE CITY OF DUFUR

CITY HALL:

Dufur City Council Meeting Tuesday, November 8th.

Dufur Park Board Meeting - Monday, November 14th.

Volunteer Ambulance meeting - Tuesdays, November 1st and 15th.

These meetings are open to the public.

DUFUR CITIZEN NOTICES:

Free Community Thanksgiving Dinner

Where: Dufur Christian Church Basement, 315 NE Harrison St, 541-467-2257

When: Thursday, November 24th; Starting at 1:0o pm

There will be three turkeys with all the trimmings, potatoes, dressing, gravy, cranberry sauce and homemade rolls. Bring a salad or dessert, or nothing at all! We want to see you and share.

Bring the whole family! All are welcome.

The Giving Tree letters will be made to families and individuals the first week of November. If anyone knows of a family or individual who needs help with Christmas, please contact Sister Patricia, 541-467-2678. Once families submit wish lists, their requests will be written on “Ornaments” and placed on trees at We3, Kramer’s and Dufur Hardware. Sometimes the trees move to Potlatch and churches. Money donations are also welcome. Thank you.

The Dufur Community Orchestra – Our adult ukulele ensemble meets at City Hall every Monday from 1-2pm. Newcomers to ukulele are welcome to join us; the more the merrier! Now in our second year, we are enjoying playing old favorites as well as simple arrangements of works by great composers. On Nov. 16th at 11:45 am, members of this group will perform for the very first time for the Dufur Potlatch senior meal. The performance will include canons by Purcell and Beethoven, an instrumental arrangement of Long, Long Ago, and a vocal arrangement of Amazing Grace. These music lessons are offered at no charge. Call Wendy for more information (Skype phone number) 541-397-0775.

Tai Chi will resume for the winter season Nov. 9th at 1:30pm at the Catholic Parish Hall. We need additional exercise opportunities when the days are short and cold! Tai Chi is an ancient Chinese practice and in Dufur, we practice a “form” promoted by MCMC. It consists of only 8 postures which we learn singly and then consecutively. Practicing Tai Chi will improve your strength and balance. I have found it also improves my memory and mental focus. Movements are slow and gentle. Anyone who can stand for an hour can do Tai Chi, and if you cannot stand you can benefit from practicing from a chair. There is no cost for this class, which is now in its fifth year!! So join us! Call Wendy Schaefer for more information: (Skype phone number) 541-397-0075.

The Librarian from the Wasco County Library Service will be at Potlatch on November 2nd, 16th, and Dec 7th with books, videos and audio books available for checkout.

The Dufur Food Pantry: The Dufur Food Pantry is in need of donations. With the economy and jobs (or lack of) as they are, the pantry is seeing many users, and is filling the needs of our community in these trying times. Anyone who is willing to help out, the pantry always needs toilet paper, laundry soap and other nonfood items since they cannot be bought with food stamps. Food items needed are coffee, spaghetti sauce, cereal, and staples such as flour, sugar, rice. There is a freezer and we take venison, etc. Please contact Pat Roberts at 541-467-2249.

CHURCHES:

Grace Covenant Church:

Sunday Services: Church Service at 11:00am, Sunday School at 9:45am. Evening Service at 6:30pm.

Wednesday Prayer and Fellowship at 7:00pm.

The first Saturday of every month is the Men’s Prayer Breakfast held 8:00am in the Fellowship Room at the back of the church. It is opened to the public, there is no charge for the food, and the cooks are excellent! Please enter at the side door on 7th Street. All are welcomed.

DUFUR SCHOOL/COMMUNITY LIBRARY

From the Librarian:

Technology in the Library
Maintaining technology is one of the goals of the school and the library district. The following are examples that support this goal:

It is now possible to request books from home. By logging in on the GorgeLINK website you can request books from any of the libraries in the library district. The courier delivers on Tuesdays. Contact us for you library card number and pin

Overdue notices can be sent to your e-mail address eliminating snail mail. Come in or call the library and we can set this up for you

A new computer provided by the Wasco County Library Services District was added to the library for patron use

Audio books are available online through Library2Go. If you are interested in listening to books, the library has MP3 players available for this purpose

GRANGE NEWS:

Don’t forget the 1st Sunday of each month is the Jam Session at Ramsey Grange from 3:00 to 6:00. The wonderful homemade pies and cakes with coffee help support the Music Department at the Dufur School.

DUFUR HISTORICAL SOCIETY:

The log cabin is open Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 10:00am to 4:00pm. In the log cabin itself there is now a quilting frame with a quilt that shows the room as it would have been used. There are some gift items remaining and are in the Metzentine Bldg. Nancy and Mike Gibson have made some new displays that are well worth seeing also in the Metzentine Bldg.

RECYCLING

The Lions Club mans the recycling center on a volunteer basis on Saturday mornings between 10:00 and 12:00. If there is not a volunteer available, the center will not be opened. If closed, it is asked that people do not leave their recyclables anyway as they get blown over the area and are a lot of work to pick up.

A reminder that newspaper recycling is in the green shed behind Kramer’s Market.
